چکیده

Abstract We describe fluctuating two-dimensional metallic antiferromagnets by transforming to a rotating reference frame in which the electron spin polarization is measured by its projections along the local antiferromagnetic order. This leads to a gauge-theoretic description of an ‘algebraic charge liquid’ involving spinless fermions and a spin S = 1/2 complex scalar. We propose a phenomenological e↵ective lattice Hamiltonian which describes the binding of these particles into gauge-neutral, electron-like excitations, and describe its implications for the electron spectral function across the entire Brillouin zone. We discuss connections of our results to photoemission experiments in the pseudogap regime of the cuprate superconductors.

Fluctuating spin density waves in metals

Recent work has used a U(1) gauge theory to describe the physics of Fermi pockets in the presence of fluctuating spin density wave order. We generalize this theory to an arbitrary band structure and ordering wavevector. The transition to the large Fermi surface state, without pockets induced by local spin density wave order, is described by embedding the U(1) gauge theory in a SU(2) gauge theor...

Reconstructed Fermi surface of underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) cuprate superconductors.

The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples of the high-T(c) superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the observed Fermi surfaces in the pseudogap phase are actually components of fully enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly small at ...

Paired electron pockets in the hole-doped cuprates

We propose a theory for the underdoped hole-doped cuprates, focusing on the “nodal-antinodal dichotomy” observed in recent experiments. Our theory begins with an ordered antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid with electron and hole pockets. We argue that it is useful to consider a quantum transition at which the loss of antiferromagnetic order leads to a hypothetical metallic “algebraic charge liquid” ...

Beyond convention

A lthough copper-oxide superconductors share with conventional superconductors the remarkable property of offering no resistance to the flow of electricity, their characteristic critical temperatures (Tc) below which this happens can be as high as 135 K. In fact, these materials belong to the emerging class of so-called strongly correlated systems — a class of materials whose list is rapidly gr...

Electron correlation and fermi surface topology of NaxCoO2.

The electronic structure of NaxCoO2 revealed by recent photoemission experiments shows important deviations from band theory predictions. The six small Fermi surface pockets predicted by local-density approximation calculations have not been observed as the associated e'(g) band fails to cross the Fermi level for a wide range of sodium doping concentration x. In addition, significant bandwidth ...
